Why Do Our Guts Love Fibre?

Our guts love a variety of plant foods, so the more different types of plants you can eat, the better it is for your heath.

But why?

Every plant food has its own mix of different types of fibre that feeds a certain set of microbes in the gut. This allows our microbes not only to grow, but flourish. And when our microbes thrive, our health benefits.

So how can you improve the variety of plants you eat each week:

🌱 Buy different varieties of the same foods e.g orange and red tomatoes or red and purple carrots - they count as different plants
🌱 Use herbs and spices in cooking, as they are plants too and are an easy way to increase variety
🌱 Buy different types of nuts and seeds and mix them together in a jar. Have them to hand as snacks or sprinkle them onto your breakfast, lunch or dinner
🌱 Try a veg box delivery - this is the best way to get seasonal variety onto your plate
🌱 Start including beans, lentils and legumes into meals. They are an inexpensive way to increase variety of plant foods
🌱 Add fresh herbs to food - this adds taste and plant points
🌱 Always think about what you can add to a meal - another vegetable, a spice, herbs or a sprinkle of seeds. Make your meals as nutrient dense as possible.

And this applies not only to what you put on your plate, but also what goes into your children's meals. Challenge them to see if they can include more plants on their plate.
